Most Stressless recliners are built in Small, Medium and Large. Seat depth, back height and width all change between the sizes, so the right one depends on where the support lands on your body rather than on your height alone. Sitting in the chair, the lower back should meet the lumbar support, both feet should rest flat on the floor, and the top of the backrest should sit around eye level. Because those dimensions differ from model to model, a Medium can be correct in one chair and a Large in the next, which is why sizing is done seated. A free Lux Fit takes about 15 minutes and needs no appointment.

The Plus system ties the headrest and the lumbar support to the recline angle. As the backrest goes down, the headrest tips forward so the head and neck stay supported instead of dropping back, and the lower-back support moves forward at the same moment to keep the lumbar curve filled in. Both happen together, mechanically, with no button and no lever to hold. Stressless introduced the Plus system in 1991 and patented it. For a nap, the headrest releases flat so it lies in line with the backrest.

By body weight alone. The Glide system, the original 1971 Stressless patent, uses a pair of tension wheels under the seat that are set once to match your weight. After that the chair follows you: lean back and it reclines, sit forward and it returns, with no lever and no handle to reach for. The adjustment knobs sit beneath the seat, one on each side, within reach while you are seated, so the tension can be fine-tuned at any time to suit how freely you like the chair to move.

The Classic base is the original. It swivels a full 360 degrees, carries the Glide and Plus systems, and pairs with a separate ottoman. The Signature base adds BalanceAdapt, a self-balancing seat that gives a subtle rocking motion as you shift, along with polished aluminum accents, a slightly higher seat and arm height, and a slightly deeper recline. LegComfort is not a base at all but a motorized footrest built into the chair in place of an ottoman, released at the touch of a button, which is the configuration to look at when floor space is tight. Stressless also builds Classic Power, Star, Cross, Urban Cross, Home Office, Moon, Disk and Sirius bases. Sitting in a Classic and a Signature back to back settles it in a couple of minutes.

Stressless currently offers four leather grades. Batick is corrected, pigment-improved and grain-embossed with most natural marks removed, making it the most uniform and the easiest to live with. Paloma is only lightly corrected, softer and more natural looking, with visible grain and color variation, and it is the most popular. Velaro is a dyed-through semi-aniline with a silky hand and a barely corrected surface. Noblesse is full-grain semi-aniline under only a thin protective topcoat, the most luxurious and the most delicate, so marks and variation are part of it. Fabric options include Dinamica microfiber alongside wool and recycled-content textiles. Whichever you pick, leather is a natural material and wants periodic cleaning and conditioning with the Stressless Leather Care Kit, which is sold through authorized retailers.

Cover runs in tiers. Ten years on the internal mechanism and the steel and wood framework, including the metal springs. Five years on the base with its swivel ring and gas lift, on all foam and interior padding, and on the electronics and power motors. Two years on power batteries, and fitting a non-original battery voids the warranty outright. One year on the leather or fabric upholstery, stitching and zippered assemblies, conditional on care to Ekornes guidelines. The terms apply to indoor residential use, require purchase from an authorized Stressless retailer and assembly by one, and require the original receipt. Floor samples and as-is purchases are excluded, and some settling of the padding is treated as normal. Stressless does not publish a lifetime warranty, so treat that claim with caution wherever you see it.

Trying one is the whole point of the sizing system, and no spec sheet substitutes for sitting in two or three sizes back to back and reclining in each. Stressless does not sell directly to consumers in the United States: every purchase goes through an authorized retailer, and the warranty is only valid on furniture bought from and assembled by one.
