How do I choose the right mattress?

Choosing the right mattress comes down to sleep position, body composition, pressure points, and partner preferences. At Mattress Lux, we use Lux Fit body-mapping during a free 15-minute consultation to match each shopper to the right mattress based on objective body data rather than commission or markup. Side sleepers usually need plusher pressure relief at the shoulders and hips; back sleepers need firmer lumbar support; stomach sleepers do best on firmer surfaces that keep the spine flat.

How often should I replace my mattress?

Most mattresses should be replaced every 7 to 10 years. Higher-quality builds like hand-tufted hybrids, organic latex, and premium hand-crafted American mattresses can last 12 to 15 years with proper care. Signs you should replace sooner include visible body impressions over 1.5 inches deep, sagging in the center, waking up with pain you did not have before, or sleeping better on hotel beds than at home.

What is the difference between memory foam, hybrid, and latex mattresses?

Memory foam contours closely to the body for pressure relief and motion isolation, but can trap heat and feel slower to respond. Hybrid mattresses combine pocketed coils with comfort foam or latex, offering bounce, edge support, and cooling along with contouring. Latex mattresses are responsive and breathable, naturally durable, and ideal for shoppers who want a more buoyant feel with no chemical off-gassing. Each material has trade-offs and the right choice depends on sleep position, body weight, and temperature preferences.

What mattress firmness is right for me?

Mattress firmness is measured on a 1-to-10 scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. Side sleepers usually do best on a medium to medium-soft (5 to 6) for shoulder and hip relief. Back sleepers prefer a medium-firm (6 to 7) for spinal alignment. Stomach sleepers and heavier bodies need firmer support (7 to 8) to prevent the hips from sinking. Couples with mixed preferences benefit from a medium feel as a compromise, or a split-feel mattress with different firmness on each side.

Should I buy a mattress online or in store?

Online direct-to-consumer mattress brands offer convenience and bed-in-a-box delivery, but you cannot test the feel before buying. Mattress Lux carries many of the top online brands including Helix, Casper, Leesa, Bear, Avocado, Birch, Naturepedic, Puffy, Winkbeds, and My Green Mattress so you can try them in person before buying. Testing in person prevents the most common online-mattress mistakes: choosing the wrong firmness, not knowing what a cooling cover actually feels like, or buying a model that does not fit your body type.
